Merge PDF files
Combine several PDFs into one, in the order you choose.
Files never leave your device
How to Merge PDF
- Press Choose PDF files and pick two or more, or drop them on the box above.
- Put them in order with the ↑ and ↓ arrows. Use Add more for another file, or ✕ to take one out.
- Press the Merge button. It shows how many PDFs will be joined.
- Press Download to save the merged PDF. Your original files are not changed.
What the merged file looks like
Every page of every file goes into the new PDF, file after file, in the order of the list. The first file’s pages come first, then all of the second file’s pages, and so on. The new file is named after the first file in the list, with “-merged” added.
Pages are copied, not redrawn. Text stays sharp and can still be selected and searched, pictures keep their quality, and links and fillable form fields come along. Each page keeps its own size and direction, so an A4 page next to a Letter page, or a landscape page among portrait ones, stays as it was.
Bookmarks are the exception: the merged file keeps the bookmarks of the first file only.
Getting the order right
Files appear in the order you add them. When you pick several at once, your phone or computer decides that first order, so check the list before you press Merge. The arrows move a file up or down one place at a time.
For an application with several papers, put them in the order the form asks for, often the main form first and supporting papers after it. When the merge is done, the message tells you how many pages the new PDF has: check that it matches the pages of your files added together.
The tool joins whole files. If you only need some pages from a file, take them out first with Split PDF and merge the smaller file. You can also add the same file twice if you need its pages twice.
Size, photos and page numbers
Merging does not compress anything, so the new file is roughly as big as the files added together. If it has to fit an email or an upload limit, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.
Only PDF files can be added here. To include photos or scans saved as pictures, turn them into a PDF with JPG to PDF first, then merge. After merging, Add page numbers can number the whole document from the first page to the last.
When a file is refused
- Password-protected PDF: remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you know. The site never guesses passwords.
- PDF with limits set by its owner (such as no editing): these are respected. Remove them with Unlock PDF and the owner’s password, then merge.
- Digitally signed PDF: tick the box that appears to go ahead. The merged copy will show the signature as invalid, so keep the signed original.
- A file that can’t be read as a PDF: try Repair PDF on it, then add the repaired copy.
Everything happens in your browser: your file is never uploaded to any server. You can check: once your file is open, turn on airplane mode — the tool still works.
Questions
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
At least two, with no set maximum. The limit is your device’s memory: many large files can be too much for a phone browser, so use a computer for those.
Can I merge PDFs without internet?
You need a connection to open this page. Once your first file is open, the tool has everything it needs, so you can add more files and merge with the connection off.
Will merging lower the quality?
No. Pages are copied exactly as they are; nothing is redrawn or compressed.
Can I merge JPG pictures with a PDF?
Not directly. Turn the pictures into a PDF with JPG to PDF, then add that PDF here with the others.
Can I choose which pages to merge?
Merge PDF always takes whole files. Use Split PDF to take out the pages you want first, then merge those files.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Merge PDF runs in your browser on your own device. The file is never sent to our server or anyone else. Once your file is open you can even turn on airplane mode.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no limits on how many files, and no watermark is added to your file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows or Linux. Very large files work best on a computer, because a phone browser has less memory.
