Compress PDF to 1 MB
Make a PDF smaller than 1 MB for an upload form — the box below is already set.
Files never leave your device
How to Compress PDF to 1 MB
- Press Choose a PDF, or drop it on the box above. Your file is read by your browser and not uploaded.
- Fit a size is already picked, with 950 in Must be under (KB). The box takes KB, not MB.
- Press Compress PDF. A long file can take a little while, because the tool may try up to four levels.
- Check the new size and the pages, then press Download.
What fits in 1 MB
1 MB is enough for a full set of scanned papers, or several photos, if the tool can go down a level or two. These results come from our own test files and are meant as a guide.
- Full A4 pages of small print, scanned in colour: two pages at Balanced (about 715 KB), five at Small (about 899 KB), or ten at Smallest (about 834 KB).
- A 3-page report with simple illustrations, 2.6 MB to start with: 680 KB at Best quality, the gentlest level.
- Three pages with one detailed 12-megapixel photo each, 7.4 MB to start with: about 578 KB at Balanced.
Photos into one PDF under 1 MB
Photos from a phone camera are often a few MB each, and JPG to PDF puts them into the PDF as they are. So a PDF made from three photos can easily be several MB. That is normal: make the PDF first, then open this page and compress it.
If the photos show documents, crop each one to the paper with Crop image before making the PDF. Compress PDF limits each picture by its longest side, so a photo cropped to the page spends its pixels on the writing, not on the table around it.
When the tool jumps further than needed
The four levels are fixed steps, and the tool keeps the first one that fits. In our test, six full scanned pages came to about 1.1 MB at Small, just too big, so the tool went on to Smallest and gave 501 KB: half the room you had, at the lowest sharpness.
When that happens, removing one page can change everything: five such pages fitted at Small, which is clearly sharper. If the form accepts two files, splitting the PDF into two parts with Split PDF does the same. The main Compress PDF page explains each level in detail.
Why 950 and not 1000
In this tool 1 MB is 1,024 KB, and 1 KB is 1,024 bytes, so 1 MB is 1,048,576 bytes. Many websites call 1 MB just 1,000,000 bytes. 950 in the box is 972,800 bytes, under both. For a 2 MB limit, type 1900 instead.
Everything happens in your browser: your file is never uploaded to any server. You can check: once your file is open, turn on airplane mode — the tool still works.
Questions
How many pages fit in 1 MB?
In our tests, ten full pages of small print scanned in colour fitted at Smallest, five at Small, and two at Balanced. Pages typed on a computer, with no scans, add almost nothing.
How do I turn photos into a PDF under 1 MB?
Make the PDF with JPG to PDF, then open this page, choose that PDF and press Compress PDF with 950 in the box. Crop document photos to the paper first for sharper text.
My scan came out at 500 KB. Can I get better quality under 1 MB?
Not from the same file, because the level above was over 950 KB and there is no step in between. Remove a page, or split the file into two parts if the form allows two uploads, and compress again.
Will the text get blurry at 1 MB?
Typed text is never changed, so it stays sharp. Scanned text depends on the level the tool needed: at Balanced or Small, normal-size print usually stays clear; at Smallest, small print can soften. Zoom in on the result before you send it.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Compress PDF to 1 MB runs in your browser on your own device. The file is never sent to our server or anyone else. Once your file is open you can even turn on airplane mode.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no limits on how many files, and no watermark is added to your file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows or Linux. Very large files work best on a computer, because a phone browser has less memory.
