Files never leave your device

How to Compress PDF to 200 KB

  1. Press Choose a PDF, or drop it on the box above. The file is handled in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. Fit a size is already chosen, with 190 in Must be under (KB).
  3. Press Compress PDF and wait for the bar to fill.
  4. Compare the old and new size, check the pages, then press Download.

What fits in 200 KB

200 KB is enough for one scanned page at a level that stays easy to read, or two pages at the strongest level. These are results from our own test files, given as a guide.

A card or paper with two sides

Many uploads ask for both sides of something: an ID card, a certificate with a stamp on the back, a two-sided form. 200 KB is a comfortable size for that if you prepare the file well.

For a card, take a photo of each side. Cut each photo down to the card with Crop image, so the background is gone. Then open JPG to PDF and choose the layout ID card: two per page (front and back), which puts both sides on one A4 page. Finally, open this page and compress the result.

Cropping first matters. JPG to PDF puts your photos in as they are, and Compress PDF then limits each picture by its longest side. A photo cropped to the card spends those pixels on the card; an uncropped one spends many of them on the table around it.

When the result is much smaller than 190 KB

The tool tries Best quality, then Balanced, Small and Smallest, and keeps the first result under your number. If one level comes out just over, the next can be half its size. That is what happened with our photo page: 194 KB at Balanced, then 94 KB at Small.

If you want a sharper result, give the file less to carry. Take out pages the form did not ask for with Split PDF, or upload two pages as two files if that is allowed. For how each level treats pictures, see the main Compress PDF page.

Why 190

This tool counts 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, so 190 means 194,560 bytes. That passes a limit of 200,000 bytes, used by sites that count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. With 200 in the box, a file could reach 204,800 bytes and fail on those sites.

Everything happens in your browser: your file is never uploaded to any server. You can check: once your file is open, turn on airplane mode — the tool still works.

Questions

Can I compress a PDF to 200 KB without losing quality?

Text, lines and drawings never lose quality, because the tool does not change them. Pictures and scans lose some detail. At 200 KB a single scanned page often fits at Small or better, which keeps normal text clear.

How do I put both sides of an ID card in one PDF under 200 KB?

Crop each photo to the card with Crop image, combine them with JPG to PDF using the ID card: two per page layout, then compress that PDF here with 190 in the box.

How many pages fit in 200 KB?

Usually one or two scanned pages, or many typed ones. In our tests one full page of small print fitted at Small, and two such pages fitted only at Smallest.

Why did a two-page file end up at Smallest?

Two pages share the same 200 KB. At Small our two full test pages came to about 362 KB, so the tool had to go one level further. Removing a page, or sending the pages as separate files, lets them stay sharper.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Compress PDF to 200 KB runs in your browser on your own device. The file is never sent to our server or anyone else. Once your file is open you can even turn on airplane mode.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no limits on how many files, and no watermark is added to your file.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows or Linux. Very large files work best on a computer, because a phone browser has less memory.
